The visit could be exhausting because of the 533 steps on the stone stairway to climb to get to the village and because of the altitude (13,000 ft above sea level). We pass ice walls, a glacier, the cascades of a frozen river, and numerous springs of hot and medicinal underground water. The mountaineer will also find lovely views over the surrounding countryside, looking down into fertile valleys and across at the Vilcanota mountains. This a snow covered range arcs away to the east, southeast, then the south, protecting the valley of Canchis From these high mountains, cold waters whisper through totora swamps south to Lake Titicaca. Eager rapids plunge north into the tropical Inambari. And from the glacier-fed lakes of the Canchis valley, rich green waters feed the river Vilcanota and Cusco´s sacred valley. We may observe rare Andean wildlife in the high wilderness, such as vicuña, vizcacha, condors, flamingos, Andean geese, and ibises.

Day 1

We bus 100 km East by Southeast from Cusco in the morning. The road passes north of Ausangate, and we leave the road a bit west of the mountain. We camp in Tinqui at 3,800. As we fall asleep the setting sun lights up the glacier on the NW face of Ausangate.

Day 2

We break camp and hike up to the Ausangate glacier. We set up camp alongside the Upis thermal springs, about 4 kilometers in the air. We bathe in the hot springs and the cold Upismayo which runs beside our camp

Day 3

Ausangate

We break camp and hike up to a pass at 4,500 which separates Ausangate proper to the East from a spur named Quellacocha to the West. In the afternoon we pass Lake Pucacocha, WSW of the summit and nestled among various minor peaks. The setting sun plays in cascades of colored ice where we finally make camp.

Day 4

We continue walking among high-altitude lakes in the valley immediately south of Ausangate, which are unnaturally green-blue. We rise to cross Palomani pass at 4,800 masl. This is the highest point on the journey. We don’t pass between the massif and some spur, but rather rise to take advantage of a gentler slope high on the mountain´s side. Here we can see east over the large hand-shaped Lake Sivinacocha to the jagged, snowcapped Vilcanota Mountains which crade this valley. We descend from the cold to camp at Chilcapinaya.

We lunch in the valley bottom, pass Lake Ticllacocha, then climb over a pass at 4,650 masl. Camp is at small Lake Q´omercocha if we make it, or at Pachaspata if dusk catches us here.

Day 6

We drop into the valley and village of Pacchanta and bathe in their hot springs all the long afternoon.

Day 7

We pass through increasingly inhabited valleys among the headwaters of the Paucartambo river on the north side of the mountain until the sun sets. We return to the road and our bus. We get back to Cusco for happy hour and a night at the discos, or a long rest, as your mood takes you.

Many countries have mountain ranges with beautiful scenery and Peru itself is richly blessed in this respect. However the scenery is only one of the elements responsible for the magic of the Inca Trail, not far from the Incas’ capital Cusco. Can there be any walk anywhere in the world with such a combination of natural beauty, history and sheer mystery and with such an awe-inspiring destination? The various ruins along the way serve to heighten the hiker’s sense of anticipation on approaching what is one of the outstanding sites in a new list of archaeological wonders of the world – Machu Picchu.

Day 1

Reception and transfer to hotel in Cusco

Inca Trail

Day 2

Between 7:00 and 7:30 am, we will pick you up at your hotel in our own private bus. We will then drive to Piskacuchu (2700 masl), a community located on the 82nd kilometer of Cusco–Machupicchu railroad. Starting at this point, we will cross the bridge and walk along the left shore of the Urubamba River as it flows north-west along the Sacred Valley.
Following the trail along a flat terrain, we will arrive in Miskay (2800 masl), to then ascend and finally see, from the tallest part of an overlook, the Inca city of Patallacta (2750 masl). We will continue trekking along the valley created by the Kusichaca river, gradually climbing for about five hours until we reach our first campsite in the Wayllabamba village (3000 masl). All along the way we will see spectacular views of the Vilcanota ridge on the opposite side of the Urubamba River, where the impressive Veronica peak reigns at 5832 masl, above sea level. Not to mention the diversity of wild flora and fauna that can be found all along the valley.

Day 3

Inca trail

We will wake up at around 6:00 am and after breakfast we will leave wayllabamba behind to begin the most difficult part of the trek which consist of an abrupt and steep ascent that stretches for 9 Km. Along this climb, the landscape changes from sierra to puna. On the way to the first pass, the Warmiwañusqa (Dead woman’s pass) 2,400 masl. from this point we will see the Veronica mountain. We advise that on this day specially, your day pack is well stocked with candies, chocolates and coca leaves that will keep your sugar level high, and help with altitude sickness. Immediately after the pass, we will descend into the Pacaymayu valley (3,600 masl), where we will camp after approximately 6h of hiking.

Day 4

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/3678042657_c771f1b007_m.jpgThis day is longest but also the most interesting, due the number of archaeological sites that we will visit and learn about from our guide. From Pacaymayu we will climb to the second pass, the Runcurakay pass (3970 masl)half way up we will visit the archaeological complex with de the same name. And after the pass we will descend towards Yanaqocha (black lagoon) and enter the cloud forest to finally arrive at Sayaqmarka ( 3624 masl ) this is beautiful complex made up of a semicircular construction. Continuing up an easy climb, we will arrive at the third pass, the abra de Puyupatamarka (3,700 masl).

Inca Trail

Along this climb we can appreciate the magnitude of the Incas ancient craft, by walking along paths semi-detached from the mountain, and seeing rocks that fill up ravines in perfect order, saving the trail from the multileveled Andean geography. To later arrive at the archeological complex of the Phuyupatamarka ( town over the clouds ). From above, one can observe a sophisticated sacred complex made up of water fountains with solid foundations. And also impressive views of the Urubamba river valley and the along descending stone steps to Wiñayhuayna Camp site.

Day 5

Machupicchu

On this last day we will get up at 4:00 am to leave Wiñayhuayna an hour later and climb to Intipunku, or the sun gate. This will take an hour of hiking along a trail of flat stones on the edges of cliffs in highland jungle. From this fabulous spot we will see the sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machupicchu, and 40 minutes later we will enter the citadel from the highest point through the “ house of the guardians ” we will then descend to the control point where we will register ourselves and leave our backpacks. We will immediately begin a complete guided tour of the Inca Citadel that will take approximately 2 hours. You will then have free time to walk around, climb to Haynapicchu Mountain, where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machupicchu, the valleys and mountains that surround it, or you can visit the temple of the moon and the fabulous Inca bridge. In the afternoon we will meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where, if you like , you can visit and relax in the thermal baths. From here we will take the train to the city of Cusco, where we will arrive after nightfall.

Machupicchu

In a two hours trek you can see a pristine cloud forest jungle. Passion fruit vines in the canopy have year around fruit that sustains a colony of monkeys and varieties of birds feeding on this fruit. You can see a variety of medical plants, hummingbirds, toucans, monkeys, and butterflies.

The height of 771 meters is thought to be relatively accurate, though Ziemendorff suspects the true figure could be within 13 meters in either direction. The falls has a regular to high volume of flow becoming an immensely powerful waterfall during the rainy season. However unlike other world class waterfalls, it doesn’t dry up in the dry season.
